Your team
 
The Directorate General Statistics consists of around 350 staff members who provide statistical products and services, as well as a whole range of aggregated and disaggregated data, to inform not only central banking and banking supervision policy decisions, but also the public at large. We therefore collaborate closely with the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), national competent authorities, Eurostat, the banking industry and other international bodies.
 
You would be joining the Directorate General at a very interesting and challenging time, given that we are currently working on modernising the data culture of the ECB, ESCB and ECB Banking Supervision to improve its fitness for a digital and globalised world in a period of rapid financial innovation.
 
In your role as a trainee, you will be part of a team responsible for collecting data and/or designing, programming and producing statistical indicators, and will work alongside committed and qualified colleagues and leaders in this field with relevant stakeholders such as economists and banking supervisors.

Your role
 
As a Trainee in Directorate General Statistics you will:
 
     * contribute to the work of the Directorate General or one of its divisions or sections;
    * gain insight into the methodology, compilation and publication of macroeconomic statistics or large-scale granular/micro datasets in a policy-oriented environment;
    * work in a team and/or independently under the guidance of a mentor, taking the initiative and interacting with other members of staff and management;
    * have an opportunity to potentially complete a conceptual or empirical study, develop statistical tools based on machine learning and present the results at a seminar.

Qualifications, experience and skills
 
Essential:
 
     * a bachelor’s degree or higher in statistics, data science,economics, finance, mathematics, computer science, operational research or another relevant field;
    * a good knowledge of the MS Office package (in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint);
    * an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages [2].
 
Desired:
 
    * knowledge of:
 
     * economic statistics, data on financial markets and instruments;
and/or,
    * international standards for statistics (for example, a national system of accounts or the European System of Accounts), business accounting standards (for example, the International Financial Reporting Standards); or,
    * banking or financial supervisory standards (for example, theм Implementing Technical Standards of the European Banking Authority);
 
     * familiarity with data and metadata management, including data collection, cleaning, validation, aggregation, visualisation, analysis and communication;
    * familiarity with techniques, such as data science tools and machine learning, used in the management, analysis, modelling and visualisation of large datasets and unstructured data;
    * familiarity with a statistical or mathematical software package (such as Python, R or SQL) and/or relational databases (such as DB2 or Oracle);
    * programming skills and knowledge of programming languages.
 
You are curious and eager to learn, and want to further develop your ability to analyse complex information. You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.
