The European Central Bank has launched:  Traineeships in banking supervision.

Your team

The Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) is the system of banking supervision in Europe. It comprises the ECB and the national supervisory authorities of the participating countries.

You will be joining one of the following three Directorates General (DGs) within the SSM:

  • Systemic and International Banks;
  • Universal and Diversified Institutions;
  • Specialised Institutions and LSIs.

Within ECB Banking Supervision, these DGs are responsible for the ongoing supervision of significant institutions (SIs) and for overseeing the supervision of less significant institutions (LSIs).

As a trainee, you will be part of a dynamic international team of experts in one of the areas below:

  • Directly supervising SIs as part of a Joint Supervisory Team (JST), comprising staff from the ECB and the relevant national competent authority (NCA). The JSTs carry out the annual Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process (SREP) as well as other supervisory tasks;
  • Indirectly supervising LSIs and handling crisis cases as part of a country desk;
  • Horizontal banking supervision projects with the involvement of the aforementioned DGs.

Your role

As a trainee, you will:

  • analyse financial accounts and monitor market perceptions of supervised banks;
  • collect and analyse data and generic tables, charts and reports;
  • analyse the legal and regulatory frameworks of financial institutions in various jurisdictions;
  • work independently, guided by a mentor, on projects relating to the implementation of supervisory practices and standards.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a bachelor’s degree or higher in finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, physics, business informatics, business administration, financial/banking law, accounting or a similar subject;
  • a keen interest in banking-related risk analysis, financial regulation and supervisory standards and practices;
  • a good knowledge of MS Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired: 

  • a master’s degree in the subjects mentioned above;
  • knowledge of data management and analysis tools, including basic coding skills;
  • knowledge of banking regulation, banking, corporate finance, risk management, statistical modelling or accounting.

You are keen to collaborate with others, pursue team goals and learn from other people’s diverse perspectives. You strive to know and anticipate stakeholder needs, and will signal any need for change and propose alternative solutions.

Who can apply:

  • EU nationals eligible for our traineeship programme.

All candidates should:

  • be a national of a Member State of the EU or of an acceding country;
  • be at least 18 years old;
  • have completed at least a first cycle qualification (minimum bachelor’s degree);
  • be fluent in English and in another official language of the EU.

Following their most recent qualification candidates should:

  • have a maximum of 12 months’ professional experience;
  • have been a trainee for no more than six months;
  • not have been an ECB trainee or have worked for the ECB previously.

Working modalities

Playing a role in European banking supervision entails collaborating in multinational and multicultural teams and operating in the context of different national frameworks, for which a strong ability to use different EU languages for business purposes is an asset.

Further information

Traineeship of 6 months, with the possibility of an extension to up to 12 months in total in the same business area or another Directorate General within ECB Banking Supervision.
